Georgia’s Union gives neighborhood something different in Sunset Harbour

Interior of Georgia’s Union has not a trace of Joe Allen.

We waited more than a month before trying Georgia’s Union, the restaurant that replaced the restaurant that replaced neighborhood gem Joe Allen.

We still miss Joe Allen at 1787 Purdy Ave. Great service, good food, neighborhood atmosphere; we know many in the Belle Isle – Sunset Harbour – Venetian Islands area who made it a regular stop. It closed in May, 2011.

Two months later, Morgan’s opened in the space. Morgan’s in Miami was a big hit, and folks in our neighborhood hoped the Miami Beach edition would hit the same mark. It held promise, but over time, we found a cross between Morgan’s and Joe Allen, with no real identity, just a little less of everything — service, consistency, quality.

In May, the folks at Morgan’s closed up shop and retooled. It reopened as Georgia’s Union in June. The result is a new, Southern (and organic) menu, a redesigned interior and — we think, success!

It bills itself as an organic soul food kitchen. It has a great bar, with reasonable drink prices and some Southern specialties by the pitcher. The menu ranges from Cornish Hen to oxtail, with sides like black-eyed peas  and smoked tomato and okra stew. The buckwheat muffins wowed us.

Service was attentive and our waiter had great command of the menu — and possible options.

It’s closed on Mondays, and on Sunday, it’s brunch/lunch only, closing at 4. Tuesday-Thursday is 6 – midnight, Friday and Saturday nights it stays open til 1 a.m.

Sunrise on Sunset Harbour: Morgans opens, Fresh Market gets closer and more

There’s progress on Purdy!

Morgans on the Beach, 1787 Purdy Ave., opened quietly on Thursday night, and diners during the weekend gave rave reviews.

Joe Allen, the neighborhood staple, was always dark, with curtains covering the windows to the street and bay views across Maurice Gibb Memorial Park. But Morgans management let in the light, and it makes an amazing difference.

A block away, the under-construction Fresh Market is taking shape toward a possible October opening. The market, 1800 West Ave., already has a manager, Ovidio Cuervo, named by Fresh Market in Greensboro, N.C.

And there is a Spanish restaurant nearing an opening in the old Picnic space at Bay Road and 20th Street. That space has hosted two failed ventures. Picnic was lousy, and Sea Rock was just too loud for dinner.

The new place looks great through the window. We’ll see.

Morgans to move into Joe Allen space

If you mourned the closing of Joe Allen’s across the bridge at 1787 Purdy Ave., here’s some great news:

The space will be taken by a new branch of Morgans, the Wynwood comfort food eatery. And New Times’ Short Order blog says the new Morgan’s eatery will be run by many of the staffers from Joe Allen.

If you haven’t tried Morgan’s, they have fantastic brunch, the best grilled cheese you ever ate, and FABULOUS cookies.

This is something to smile about.

The Miami Herald restaurant critic, Virginia Pesce Elliott confirmed this in her question and answer column.
