The installation of new air conditioning equipment on top of the Island Terrace  condo, 5 Island Avenue, created quite a stir on Belle Isle this morning.

A helicopter lifted the huge units off trucks and softly placed them 16 stories high on the roof of the Morris Lapidus-designed building, built in 1967.

The spectacle drew the attention of Belle Isle Residents Association president Scott Diffenderfer and board member Herb Frank, who photographed the event from their condos on the east side ofthe island.

I live in Mid Beach and we are constantly disturbed by the noise of helicopters (both news, developer and/or wealthy tourist driven). It is one thing for heavy equipment to be gently delivered to Belle Isle buildings (if that saves time, money, inconvenience) but another thing if it becomes people being shuttled here and there from the airport or elsewhere. We (neighborhoods) should all band together to eliminate the possibility of helicopters delivering anything but roof equipment (read “people”) to any and all rooftops within at least ten blocks (more?) of any residential building anywhere in the city of Miami Beach. Just my humble opinion. Let’s go to the Planning board now before it becomes an issue.
