State to meet Nov. 15 on proposed West Avenue bridge

Proposed path for the West Avenue Bridge.

Planning is moving forward by the state Department of Transportation for a bridge that would link West Avenue over the Collins Canal, 17th Street and Dade Boulevard.

The bridge would more easily connect the stores, clubs and restaurants in the Sunset Harbour neigbborhood with the area around Epicure to the south, and certainly would be convenient for drivers and bicyclists, who sometimes have a circuitous path between the two. But it also could add intensity and speed to the traffic north and south.

FDOT held a public meeting in September on the proposed West Avenue bridge. At this meeting, the state and the City of Miami Beach are scheduled to reveal alternative plans for public comment.

According to Belle Isle Residents Association president Scott Diffenderfer, they are expected to show alternatives with different bridge widths — arious lanes, sidewalks and bike lanes. There’s also an alternative in which no bridge is built.

The meeting happens on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m. at the Miami Beach Regional Library, 227 22 St.

Before the September meeting, FDOT issued a report on its study of the area, as well as the planning process.

One response to “State to meet Nov. 15 on proposed West Avenue bridge

  1. If done properly, this would be a fantastic addition to our neighborhood. In order to curb speed, the city’s police would need to monitor West Ave as rabidly as they do Alton, though.

Additionally, this blog is terrific. Thank you for your information.
