The Venetian Causeway is an historic, scenic highway, and it isn’t built for heavy duty traffic.

Venetian Isle residents don’t want big trucks for quality of life reasons, but fact is, the bridges themselves can’t sustain the weight of bigger rigs. That’s why there are weight restrictions for the Miami-Miami Beach crossing.

Abuse of those rules is part of the reason the bridges soon will need repairs again; it’s also why the Florida Highway Patrol plans to crack down on overweight vehicles during the next couple of weeks.

The special detail should be in effect weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Good news for our causeway.
